Control Your Anger

Anger is a normal human emotion that is found within every person but turns destructive when not controlled. Mismanagement of anger causes one problems at work, in personal relationships, and in the overall quality of one’s life. Therefore the guidance given to us in the hadith is towards the management, control and curbing of anger.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that a man asked Rasulullah SAW, “Advise me.” Rasulullah SAW said, “Do not get angry.” He repeated the request several times and Rasulullah SAW repeated, “Do not get angry.” (Bukhari, Tirmizi, Muatta Imam Malik)

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah SAW said, “A strong person is not a wrestler. Rather a strong person is the one who controls himself at the time of anger.” (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood)

Hazrat Atiyyah ibn Urwah As Sa’di (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah SAW said, “Anger is from Shaytan and Shaytan has been created from fire. Only water puts out fire, so if any of you gets angry then make wudhu.” (Abu Dawood)

Hazrat Abu Zarr (Radiyallahu Anhu) narrates that Rasulullah SAW said to us, “If any of you gets angry whilst standing then sit. If the anger still does not leave him then he should lie down.” (Abu Dawood)

These practical teachings were sublimely displayed by Rasulullah SAW in all his relationships; with the Sahabah, in public, at home, with young and old, friend and foe. If anger is controlled and managed in the desired manner then conflicts and disputes will be resolved amicably.
