A: Islamically an infant (boy or girl) should be breastfed for two Islamic years, not more. It is impermissible to continue breastfeeding beyond two Islamic years. Hence, the child should be gradually weaned off the breast milk before this age so that breastfeeding does not continue beyond this period.
